A comunicação não verbal no ato interpretativo / Non-verbal communication in interpreting

A partir da segunda metade do século XX, logo após o término da Segunda Guerra Mundial, e mais atualmente com o advento da globalização, o mundo viu-se obrigado a se reorganizar geopoliticamente, o que resultou no estreitamento das relações internacionais. Nesse sentido, os intérpretes exercem um papel fundamental na sociedade, pois ao transitarem entre universos lingüísticos distintos, facilitam a aproximação dos povos. O ato interpretativo é a transferência de mensagens de uma língua para outra. Ocorre que parte dessa mensagem é de natureza não verbal, o que pode representar um desafio para o profissional inexperiente. Esse trabalho tem por objetivo analisar a comunicação não verbal no ato interpretativo. Para fins de análise, definimos e categorizamos o comportamento não verbal, segundo Argyle, Poyatos e Besson et al. e observamos como o profissional intérprete faz a transferência desses elementos durante a interpretação. Interpretar é transferir mensagens, e a boa transferência não depende apenas do volume de informações verbais presentes no ato enunciativo, mas também de nossa capacidade de extrair o máximo de significado dos elementos não verbais disponíveis.

From the second half of the 20th century onwards, soon after the end of World War II and more recently due to globalization, the world has been forced to reorganize itself geopolitically, which has spurred international relations. Therein, interpreters play an important role in society since they are constantly moving through different linguistic universes, thus facilitating the relationship among people. Interpreting consists in transferring messages from one language into another. However, part of these messages is of non-verbal nature, which presents a challenge to the inexperienced interpreter. The objective of this paper is to analyze non-verbal communication in interpreting. In order to carry out this analysis, we have defined and categorized non-verbal behavior according to Argyle, Poyatos and Besson et al. We have also observed how interpreters convey these non-verbal elements during the act of interpreting. Interpreting is the transfer of messages, and a good transfer does not depend only on the amount of verbal information present in the speech, but also on the capacity to make the most out of the non-verbal elements available.
